Question:
Pastor, is it wrong to desire a comfortable life? I’m not talking extravagant, but for example, to have the white picket fence in the country type of comfort? I know Jesus never promised us comfort, but is it wrong to want it?
Answer:
God the Holy Spirit is called the ‘comforter’. God the Father the ‘God of all comfort’ Look at II Corinthians 1:3-6 3 “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;” 4 “Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” 5 “For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.” 6 “And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.” NOTICE VERSE THREE! ‘GOD OF ALL COMFORT’. Are you looking to God for your comfort. The more difficulty you endure, the more comfort you can receive from your heavenly Father. It is not wrong to want a comfortable life… just make sure you have a comfortable eternal life first by believing on the lord Jesus Christ. Comfortable and extravagant are arbitrary words. As a Christian you will never have a “comfortable” life because you are at odds with the world. Just as Jesus was persecuted we too will be persecuted for His sake. If you have a comfortable life there is something wrong… probably it is because you have become a causality, and devil doesn’t see you as a threat. Your financial condition is dictated to us by God. It is God who gives us the power to get wealth. The Holy Spirit will guide you on how you should use it for the Lord’s work. You have to listen closely! While you’re getting comfortable, ask yourself if there are any areas that the Lord’s work needs your financial means, and resolve how best to use your funds under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Don’t forget the widow who gave her last mite! It just has to be worked out with you spiritually under the guise of the Holy Spirit.
