Question:

DR HANK: CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE SEVEN SAYING OF JESUS FROM THE CROSS? THANKYOU PETER J. MUSTACCHIA LAKELAND

Answer:

1. Matthew 27:46 “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Matthew 27:46 concerns the separation from God because of the sin He bore on our behalf. This is ‘spiritual death’ as death mean separation in the Bible. Just as Adam was separated from God because of his sin, Jesus (the man) was separated from God because of our sin. It was difficult to bear the separation from God. 2. “Matthew 27:50. “…he cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.” This is probably the same as the case in Mark 15:34. Jesus is in the act of dying. It could also be alluding to the words in John 19:30 or Luke 23:46. 3. Mark 15:34 this the same as Matthew 27:46 where God separates Himself from Jesus because of our sins that Jesus bore. It was difficult to bear the separation from God 4. Mark 15:37 records Jesus crying out with a loud voice. The word in the Greek is “sound” while verse 34 is a voice. This was not conversation, but the sound Jesus made as He died, much perhaps like a groan. It could also be alluding to the words in John 19:30 or Luke 23:46. We are talking about a undefined sound. 5. Luke 23:34 states that Jesus asks forgiveness for what they were doing to Him. 6. Luke 23:43 records Jesus as saying to the man on the cross that because of his belief (trusting) in Him (Jesus) that the thief would be with Him in paradise. 7. Luke 23:46 Jesus is shown commending His spirit to God. Jesus was dying. 8. John 19:26 & 27 states Jesus said behold thy son. And to John he said behold thy mother. Jesus as the first born took care of His mother. As He died, he turned that responsibility over to John who later took Mary with him to Ephesus. 9. John 19:28 shows Jesus as fulfilling Scripture when He said, “I thirst”. 10. John 19:30 records Jesus as saying, “it is finished.” “It is finished” is better translated “Paid in full,” speaking of paying for our sins.
