Q # 7985980

Question:

Hi Hank, would you please explain what Paul means when he uses the word “first” in 1 Tomothy 1:16 “Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.” Did Paul mean that he was the first under the new dispensation to be used by God without him (Paul)actively seeking Him? Up until then, the disciples and even Cornelius were Godly people and seeking God’s truth, but Paul wasn’t when Christ almost forcibly took him. Please explain. Jim from Clw.

Answer:

No! I believe as the Apostle to the Gentiles that he led the way as a pattern of suffering of those who would serve the Lord Jesus. That Paul as the one who brouht the gospel to the Gentiles was not exempted from suffering and trials. II Timothy 3:12 states, “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”
