Question:
Two short questions: In your view of creation, what does Genesis 1:1 mean when God says, “Let there be light” and what does Genesis 1:4 mean when, “God divided the light from the darkness”?
Answer:
Genesis 1:3 ‘Let there be light’ is referring to let light shine on the earth again. There was light when God created the universe in Genesis 1:1. The earth was later judged and we find the earth covered in darkness in Genesis 1:2. God then decides to inhabit the earth again an allows light to shine upon the earth again. In verse 4 when he divides the light. The division is determined by the earth’s rotation as the light shines on one-half of the earth at time. So that a period of light and darkness make for one full day or a 24 hour period.
